(5) It was him all along

Question: Is the main conflict between sharply differentiated good and evil, or is it more subtle and complex? Sharply differentiated means that it is easy to see the contrast and the characters are clearly good or evil.

“Are you warning me against somebody or someone?” I said, with a suddenly aroused interest. “That is not at all a proper question for me to answer,” said Mr. Lippincott. “I will go this far. Where large sums of money are concerned it is advisable to trust nobody” So he was warning me against someone, but he wasn’t going to give me any name”(pg.200).

The quote tells us that maybe it wasn’t a curse and someone is going after him because of what he has. This after the death of Ellie he is just picking up what his wife him because she was a wealthy woman. After reading this it made me think more about how it was all fake and someone wanted to stay with all her money. But also the women that had told Ellie about the curse was killed and was presume as an accident. But at the end, I found out that someone did want Ellie killed for all whole money but in order to do that he needed to be close. After it was all done he got rid of the witness that were part of this whole plan. The book was very interesting I like Agartha Christie books of mystery and I enjoy this book just like And then there were none. I recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery and are very good with clues.

Well, the conflict may be sharply evil and complex because a death occurs in the land which can indicate that someone did it or if the land is really cursed. Ellie the character that is was a wealthy woman that had married our main character and narrator Michael Roger. The book is giving us clues that can be discovered by paying attention and that makes me think that the conflict is complex. Now for evil, it’s pretty much common sense because a cursed land doesn’t bring good things to your life and just maybe it had to do with Ellie death.

(5) Death came to soon

Characterize the main conflicts: physical, moral, or emotional. You have to first decide what the main conflict is or the main conflicts are. Think of what the protagonist desires and who or what is keeping him/her from getting what he/she wants. Is that conflict physical (how?), moral (how?), or emotional (how? what emotion(s) and why?)?

“There was no specific organic injury to have caused death, and he could give no other explanation of it than that she had died from heart failure caused by shock. As far as I could male out from the medical language used Ellie had died simply as a result of absence of breath-of aspyxia of some kind. “(181).

We have reach a dark and mysterious moment of the book. The death of Ellie is unexplained and came out of nowhere when I first read it. It resulted in Ellie dying during her daily horse riding. She was healthy on every organ, she had nothing wrong with her body. So cops question everyone who was closed to Ellie to investigate if this was intentional or it was all an accident but even they mention that they should leave because this lands are evil. The quote says it’s medically can not be explain what has happen to her so this made believe that this whole mystery may be true about the curse. This can relate to the question because the conflict is her suspiciously dying and how this creates a lot emotion towards her husband and family.

Before reading the book I believe the conflict maybe be emotional because having a curse that can kill you, will make you be afraid, and the mysterious death of Ellie will have an impact on Michael. The couple is trying to live a life together in the Gibsy Acre the land they purchase. But whats stopping them from doing that is all weird things happening from random letters and everyone telling them to leave. All this things are making them believe that their choice of being happy will have to wait or no longer be. What else is stopping them is that Ellie life ended and be with her partner is not a possibility. After reading the book the conflicts were actually emotionally and physical. It’s a physical problem because actually Ellie did not die because of an accident someone wanted her dead.

(5) The mystery of the land

What is the theme of your book?  (How do you know?)  Before you read the book, what did you think about this subject? Did reading this book give you a new insight or deepen what you already know about this theme?

“Whoever called this place Gipsy’s Acre and said it had a curse on it may have have had something,” I said angrily. “We’ve got gipsies who jump out from behind trees and shake fists at us and warn us that if we don’t get out of here, some awful fate will happen to us. This place that ought to be good and beautiful”(pg.147).

This quote is further into the book where Ellie and Michael purchase the land and build their home. Ellie was spooked by old women that lived in the village and told her that the lands they purchased are cursed and your life wouldn’t be the same. After going more deep into the book Ellie and Michael started to receive letters that had warnings about the danger there gonna be going through if they don’t leave and how soon bad things would happen. This section the character are being more afraid of what could happen because they don’t when it could happen. They thought they can build something new and be happy as a family but by believing something that is maybe not true can change them.

The theme of the book is mystery because after finding out that Gipsy Acre land is cursed weird things are happening until one day Fenella Roger (Ellie) goes missing during horse riding. Before I read the book I thought I was gonna be able to know if it was really a curse or find who murder Ellie. But the book kept confusing me and the clues were linking somewhere else and that made harder to understand the situation. Well, the book did surprise me at the end, and the theme mystery deepen because it always had me thinking and read more, in my opinion. The theme kept being a mystery until the end when its all reveal and you’ll ask yourself “it was him all along”.

(5) Curse lands of Hell

How is it unusual or unfamiliar? Where are you most comfortable in this setting and why? How is the setting in this novel an important part of the plot?

“Aye,” he said, “you can laugh but there’s places as is cursed. You smart-Alecks in town don’t know about them. But there’s places as is cursed all right, and there’s a curse on this place. People got killed here in the quary when they got the stone out to build. Old Geordie he fell over the edge there one night and broke his neck”.(pg.5)

So he’s explaining about the curse that links the Gipsy’s Acre and how tragic accidents had occurred because of it. This quote can prove that the setting where the book is gonna take place will be mysterious and make hard for the reader to feel comfortable. But the main question that I had after reading the first few pages, was is it just a story that has been pass for generation or is it all real. Well, the characters of Michael and Ellie will find out later in the book. Ellie is a young wealthy woman that fell in love with Michael our book narrator. Michael is a person that keeps moving and changes jobs until he married Ellie.

The setting is unfamiliar because it takes place on a land that is been cursed according to the stories the character hear about and tell. The stories they are saying about the curse is whoever lives on those islands their life would be miserable or death. The name of Gipsy’s Acre was the name given by the village that lives around it. This curse had started with the old owners from the lands they had cursed a long time ago. Well if I heard that the land I purchase is cursed I wouldn’t feel too comfortable living or getting near it because who knows how long I’ll be alive. But overall the choice of Gipsy Acre being the setting made it important to the plot because if you wanted mystery and have a lot of questions this choice would fit perfect. If it wasn’t for this setting it wouldn’t be much of a mystery.

(4) Being bad don’t mean you don’t feel regret.

Question: Is the main conflict between sharply differentiated good and evil, or is it more subtle and complex? Sharply differentiated means that it is easy to see the contrast and the characters are clearly good or evil.

Vera is discoverd of what the crime she commited and this what she says during the conversation with Lombard. “Sometimes-I’m not sure…Lombard looked at her. He said: That’s conscience.. After a moments silence he said very quietly: So you did drown that kid after all? Vera said vehemently: I didn’t! I didn’t!You’ve no right to say that!he laughed easily. Oh yes, you did, my good girl! I don’t know why. Can’t imagine. There was a man in it probably. Was that it? A sudden felling of lassitude, of intense weariness, spread over Vera’s limbs. She said in a dull voice: Yes-there was a man in it… Lombard said softly: Thanks. That’s what I wanted to know…..”(pg.254)

They are describing Roger crime as “Wife murder is perfectly possible-almost natural, lets say! But not this particular kind! I can belive in Roger killing his wife because he was scared of her breaking down and giving him away, or because he’d taken a dislike to her, or because he wanted to link up with some nice little bit rather less long tooth. But I can’t see him as the lunatic Mr. Owen dealing out crazy justice and starting on his own wife for a crime they both committed.”(155).

That quote has Vera denying that she drown a boy with her hands and Lombard knows but still she denies it. I feel that she hasn’t learn anything now that there a few of them still alive and probably has no regret in do it because it was all for a man. The second quote tells us that people belive that Roger was not that smartest and that the crime he committed was an act of dislike or afraid of her wife giving him away. This conflict is between good and evil in my opinion because they did committed evil act and they needed to be punish but also they shouldn’t be killed for mistake. Some of this characters deserve to be dead and other don’t because they are regretted of what they did. Now in my opinion she needed to die first I mean who kills a little boy for a man. Probably that man wants nothing with you. But other character were changing like Dr. Armstrong from being an alcoholic after he accidentally killed a patient after consuming alcohol. But over people deserve a second chance and to turn them self in to justice and do their time in prison. The book kinda suck because this was a unsolve mystery that cops could not figure out. Also Vera ended up hanging her self just like the ending of the poem. So they were warned since the beginning that’s very mind-blowing. Over I like this it had me attached and to find out who was next and who was killing them but I do recommend this book if you like mystery and thriller.

(4) Murder on the loose

Characterize the main conflicts: physical, moral, or emotional. You have to first decide what the main conflict is or the main conflicts are. Think of what the protagonist desires and who or what is keeping him/her from getting what he/she wants. Is that conflict physical (how?), moral (how?), or emotional (how? what emotion(s) and why?)?

“Blore was wrestling with the bolts of a low man-hole. He said: That chap moves damned quietly. A minute or two ago we saw him in the garden. None of us heard him come upstairs. Lombard: I suppose thats why we assumed it must be a stranger moving about here. Blore disapeared into a cavernous darkness. Lombard pulled a torch from his pocket and followed.”(pg.31)

This quote happens two deaths happen and now they are being more precautions of the situation they are in. They always got be aware with who they are with and where because if you don’t one of them may betray you. But also trying to be independent and I try to survive by your self is dumb because you just made yourself into an easy target to be killed. Well the main conflict is this 10 character are being killed by someone and they got to find out before they all die. All 10 of these character are protagonist because they are all trying to figure why are they here and start revealing some of their past but also every character is important to the story. So they someone is killing them and what they want is to get out of the island but they can’t call for help and they all got to watch their backs because who know which is gonna be stabbing them in the back. So the conflict is more physical because the murder has to kill them and he doesn’t just kill them he plans an order on who is dying and how. Also the murder has faked his own death so no one can suspect it was him and makes it easier for him to plan his next move without being watch over the other people. But he also did not do it alone Armstrong has help by convincing to become his ally but he got killed and that’s what he deserve.

(4)It was there since the beginning

What is the theme of your book?  (How do you know?)  Before you read the book, what did you think about this subject? Did reading this book give you a new insight or deepen what you already know about this theme?

The thing that makes the book mysterious is the poem that Vera read

Ten little soldier nys went out to dine; One choked his little self and then there were Nine

Nine little soldier boys sat up very late; One overslept himself and then there were Eight

Eight little soldier boys traveling in Devon; One said he’d stay there and then there were Seven.

Seven little soldier boys chopping up sticks; One chopped himself in halves and then there were Six.

Six little soldier boys playing with a hive; A bumble bee stung one and then there were Five.

Five little soldier boys going in for law; One got in Chancery and then there were Four.

Four little soldier boys going out to sea; A red herring swallowed one and then there were Three.

Three little soldier boys walking in the Zoo; A big bear hugged one and then there were Two.

Two little soldier boys sitting in the sun; One got frizzled up and then there was One.

One little soldier boy left all alone; He went and hanged himself and then there were None.

I don’t know if this a riddle or if they need to keep this in mind but that is very creepy and mysterious. It’s very mysterious because it’s a poem that talks about how there 10 people and one by one are dying. But also creepy because why would they have a poem like and I would be definitely be creeped out knowing I’m surrounded by 9 more people. Also after having the first person dead and then the second one but they keep dying the way is describe in poem would be a major twist  or do they. Also being the last person alive and not knowing when he’s gonna attack you or like the poem says at the end for the last little soldier boy.

The theme of the book is mystery and thriller because we have 10 character in island that they never been before and they don’t what to expect. I like the subject of being 10 character stuck in the island and one by one is getting killed and it could be any one of them because they are all criminals. For this book trust could be an issue some could be your pal then the next second he’s stabbing you in the back, and that’s what got me to reading the book. It made me want to read more books like this but what really got me was trying to figure out who was killing or finding out who was next. Some of this character you may want them dead but other you’ll like until they die which actually got me into reading and figure why they die or why were they next.

(4)This island is Wack

How is it unusual or unfamiliar? Where are you most comfortable in this setting and why? How is the setting in this novel an important part of the plot?

The book starts off by introducing all 10 characters and giving a little about their background so you can know them. All ten of them get invited or sent to soldier island, which is an island outside English coast. This 10 characters have one thing in common which all of them have a crime history. But for some of this characters we don’t know what crimes they committed until later in the book. First character is Vera Claythorne she killed a little boy who was under her care. Philip Lombard a very mysterious person who is believe was a soldier from Africa. Emily Brent is an old religious that always be reading her bible but don’t let that confuse you she also committed a crime of killing someone. Judge Lawrence Wargrave is a smart retired judge with a commanding personality. Thomas Roger is butler married to Ethel Roger and they are committed of finding dead bodies where they work. General John Gordon MacArthur is the oldest from the group and was accused of sending someone to his death during World War I. William Henry Blore was a corrupt policemen. Anthony Marston he is the a handsome, athletic guy but his driving skills let him to killing two innocent child and has no remorse. Isaac Morris is the arranging the meet up in Soldier Island and sold drugs to a women and let her to commit suicide. Dr. Edward George Armstrong was an alcoholic and that cause him to accidentally kill a patient while being drunk but he is recovering from alcoholism. We will find out what happens in the island

For some of this character going to an island was great and they describe it as”There was something magical about an island- the mere word suggested fantasy. You lost touch with the world- an island was a world of its own. A world, perhaps, from which you might never return”(pg.36).

What the quote is telling us that being in island it’s great they’re not a lot of people or be stuck doing something but instead be in your own world. But other thought something else like Mr. Blore thought about it as ” Soldier Island. He remembered Soldier Island as a boy… Smelly sort of rock covered with gulls stood about a mile from the coast”(pg.16). This setting is very unfamiliar because the books takes place during the 1930’s and I don’t know how people acted or how everything works. I’ve never been to an island that is not surrounded by people. But I like where this is going the Island from the book has different stories of what had happen or who is the owner. I’m comfortable back in the city where there are people and where to run for help. Also being in island is terrifying and being surrounded by criminals and murder makes everything uncomfortable. The setting is important because is mystery book where our 10 characters get invited or sent to soldier island by someone. One by one they are being murder and being in island as a setting makes intense because they can’t call for help or escape, so in order to survive they need to find the murder before he kills everyone.

(3)Revealing the Truth

Characterize the main conflicts: physical, moral, or emotional. You have to first decide what the main conflict is or the main conflicts are. Think of what the protagonist desires and who or what is keeping him/her from getting what he/she wants. Is that conflict physical (how?), moral (how?), or emotional (how? what emotion(s) and why?)?

Thomas has discovered who put them there and also that Teresa and he was part of it. They were doing research on the brain of each individual boy to see if they are capable of surviving. After the attack, they rally up to convinced the rest of group that there’s a way out. But Gally blames Thomas for all the deaths that happen the night. Thomas and Teresa get incarcerated but some grew tired of being so long in the maze and seeing no progress. The group comes up with a plan to escape but with Gally it was hard. So every time there was an infected or traitor they were sent to the maze alone so that was his key out. So skipping through they pass the maze they find the door they fight a few monster and they get out but when they get their they find people dead. So they get rescue and get sent somewhere and it ends there.

“Are they changed because they want to go back to their old life, or is it because they’re so depressed at realizing their old life was no better than what we have now?” p.149

The quote is mentioning that they are never gonna see their old life but they gonna realize they got people around them that care. So conflict is emotional because they are stuck in the maze they are not gonna know who they are or if they have families. The protagonist wants to find a way out from the maze but the thing from stopping him is those things in the maze. It’s emotional because living in the maze for a few years makes you think of what were you before you were put there. Also, people who put them there were looking for a cure and thinking that these kids are a new hope.

(3)A nightmare he wants to wake up from

Is the main conflict between sharply differentiated good and evil, or is it more subtle and complex? Sharply differentiated means that it is easy to see the contrast and the characters are clearly good or evil.

Thomas had spent his first night in the maze and it’s somewhere to stay in at night. There are weird creatures that come out at night and eat you if you’re not somewhere safe. After that happening he then gets see as a maze runner and joins that group. He learns really quickly on how the maze and realize there is a pattern between the number they found. Later on, the book the doors don’t close and they are attacked by the monster and killed half of the boys leaving some injured. The first boy who was in the maze had been injected with something that the monsters have in their tales. That reveal why were they there and who send them it all came to Thomas being the responsible of all that.

“It looked like an experiment gone terribly wrong- something from a nightmare.Part animal, part machine, the Griever rolled and clicked along the stone pathway” p 126

The quote describes to us the things that are in the maze and for that, the conflict can be evil. They were put in a maze and they got to figure out how to get out. Also, people put monsters that can kill the boys if they are not careful. In my opinion, that’s bad it makes solving the maze harder and also killed a lot of boys. But in the story, there’s a guy name Gally he doesn’t like Thomas but he does follow the rules and that could make him both good and evil. He can be good because he also helps the group and makes people follow the rules so no one gets in a conflict. He can also be evil because he doesn’t want them to leave after Thomas found out a way to get out.
